The A&G Stainless Steel Story

A&G Stainless Steel, a division of A&G Engineering, is a major supplier of stainless-steel pipe, tube, flanges, and fittings for fluid transfer applications. With deep connections to the Australian stainless-steel industry, this family-run enterprise has earned a reputation defined by its quality, service, and the unique “family corporate” culture that sets it apart from competitors. As Tom Gallagher, CEO of A&G Engineering, explains, the success of A&G Stainless Steel is the result of a decades-long journey characterised by innovation, research and development of new products, sourcing and supply chain, and an unwavering commitment to personalised service.

The Origins of A&G Stainless Steel

A&G Stainless Steel began as a complementary business to A&G Engineering’s primary focus on stainless steel tank manufacturing, initially geared towards the Australian wine industry. By the 1990s, A&G Engineering had become a prominent player in this sector, supplying large volumes of stainless-steel tanks to meet the unique needs of wineries. This role as a major fabricator naturally positioned the company as a major consumer of stainless steel. “For a long time, we were probably one of the country’s biggest consumers of stainless steel,” recalls Gallagher. With this market position came purchasing power and industry recognition, factors that would lay the foundation for their entry into stainless steel distribution.

The transition from manufacturing to retail was driven by client demand. Gallagher explains that, in the early days, A&G was often approached by local businesses seeking stainless steel pipe or tubing for small projects. The team would accommodate these requests, but over time, it became clear that there was an unmet market need. “We found that our prices were as good as, if not better than, any merchants, simply due to the volume we were purchasing,” Gallagher says. Recognising the opportunity, A&G decided to invest in this division of the business, and what started as sideline revenue stream was launched as a stand-alone business in the A&G Group.

Strategic Expansion and Growth

nitially, A&G Stainless Steel operations were centred in Griffith, a natural starting point given the winery clientele in the region. Fronted by then A&G Retail Manager Adrian Emery, this base and personalised service allowed the company to support nearby industries effectively, quickly gaining a foothold in the stainless-steel supply chain. Over time, A&G’s geographic reach expanded as they identified additional markets with similar needs. One such area was Mildura, part of Australia’s productive Riverland region, where A&G’s long-standing presence in the winery market further supported the need for local stainless-steel distribution.

To lead this expansion, Emery met and brought in Peter Robertson, a passionate advocate for the business, who helped to build A&G’s reputation in the area from the ground up. Gallagher describes this phase as pioneering, noting that Robertson’s efforts started “pretty much with a ute, his two feet, and a heartbeat,” eventually developing the branch into a substantial operation. The Mildura business thrived, solidifying A&G Stainless Steel’s presence and preparing the company to expand to the Melbourne market. This systematic, steady growth reflects the A&G approach to business—one that values informed decisions and a strong foundation in each community they serve.

Key Differentiators and the “Family Corporate” Approach

A defining characteristic of A&G Stainless Steel is the “family corporate” culture that underpins its operations. While A&G has grown into a multi-faceted organisation with far-reaching impact, it remains committed to the values that define a family-owned business. According to Gallagher, this balance between familial values and corporate capabilities creates a unique work environment and client experience. “We approach our partnerships with the same respect and trust that we foster within our own team,” he says. This family-inspired culture has become an essential part of the A&G service model, nurturing strong relationships with clients across various industries.

A&G places a high priority on customer service and strives to understand each client’s unique requirements. “Our customers know that when they work with us, they’re not just a number,” Gallagher remarks. This level of engagement and commitment has led to enduring relationships, with many clients returning to A&G Stainless Steel for reliable service and high-quality products year after year.

Building Long-Term Partnerships

At the heart of A&G Stainless Steel’s success is a commitment to fostering long-term partnerships. The company views each transaction as a link in a long-term relationship rather than focusing on one-off sales and A&G’s team emphasises the value of ongoing support and reliability. This philosophy is especially significant for industries where fluid transfer is mission-critical, as clients rely on A&G to ensure that the correct products are available when and where needed to keep their operations running smoothly.

This partnership-focused approach is strengthened by A&G’s deep industry knowledge and hands-on expertise. As Gallagher explains, “We understand our customers’ businesses because, in many ways, they’re similar to ours—we’re also manufacturing, also engineering, and we know the stakes”, adding, “If there’s a problem, whether it’s of our doing or not, we’re going to solve it and help so our customer can move on. That support is really important to us and something we’re deeply committed to.” This empathy with clients’ operational challenges allows A&G to offer tailored solutions that go beyond standard distribution services, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted partner in addition to a supplier.

A&G Stainless Steel Today and Tomorrow

A&G Stainless Steel is a trusted resource for industries across Australia. From wineries to food processing plants, the company’s products play an essential role in fluid transfer applications. Looking to the future, A&G Stainless Steel aims to continue expanding its reach while maintaining the values that have earned the company its reputation for excellence.

In an increasingly competitive market, A&G remains committed to its foundational principles: quality, accessibility, and a genuine partnership approach. For clients, this means a dependable source of stainless-steel products, solutions and advice, delivered with the consistency and personal touch that only a “family corporate” business can provide. As Gallagher reflects, “A&G isn’t just about stainless steel; it’s about building relationships and standing by our partners. That’s what keeps us moving forward.”
